It was first founded by and named after the late Maggie Keswick Jencks in 1993, who died of cancer in 1995. Like her husband, architectural writer and critic Charles Jencks, she believed in the ability that buildings could uplift people. They believed a good atmosphere of building could release pressure to help promote healing. Thus the maggie’s centre buildings created a safe and comfortable feeling for cancer patients. Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends. The first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 and since then Maggie’s has continued to grow, with 20 Centres at major NHS cancer hospitals in the UK and abroad. Maggie’s also has an Online Centre.
